The Limelight project with Sans façon

  • Date: Monday, 17th Oct 2011 - 19th Oct 2011
  • Venue/Location: The Piazza, MediaCityUK
  • The University of Salford in association with CUBE Gallery is delighted to announce that Limelight, a public art commission by Sans façon artists Tristan Surtees and Charles Blanc will be taking place after dark until late on the Piazza at MediaCityUK from Monday 17th October to Wednesday 19th October.
Over the past 12 months in cities around the world, sidewalks were turned into impromptu stages by swapping streetlights for theatre spotlights, now, as daylight fades, Salford Quays welcomes Limelight.
    What the press say:
"The spotlight attracts the young and the old, solo performers and couples, families and folks on a night out. Some avoided the limelight, slinking around its edge like jail breakers avoiding the watchtowers light, whilst others bath in it whole-heartedly. Performances have been spontaneous, surprising, and often quite touching. They range from the hilarious, the tipsy, the tender and the skillful but above all the romantics hogged the light. Displays included all manner of dance moves, from graceful stag leaps to the robot dance, serenades and passionate canoodling.
Limelight is an art installation by Glasgow based arts practice Sans façon. The simple intervention replaces two streetlights with theater spotlights, transforming instantly the street into a stage and passers-by into performers, somewhere between spectacle and surveillance. This intentionally subtle alteration suggests the latent potential of public realm as places of interaction and celebration and offers an alternative approach to city’s lighting as more than a security measure."
Following the installation at MediaCityUK the project is set to visit Sleepless Night in Miami and theTina B Festival in Prague.

Limelight has appeared in the following cities:
Glasgow (UK), Newcastle (UK), Inverness (UK), London (UK), Arlington, Virginia (USA), Kansas City, Missouri (USA), Gaborone (Botswana), Frankfurt (Germany) and Toronto (Canada).
